On Saturday, April 14, over one hundred volunteers hopped out of bed to join forces with Knology, the Outdoor Channel, Turn Back The Block, and the Harrisburg-West End Neighborhood Association for Harrisburg Clean and Green Day. Phil Williams, President of the neighborhood association, assigned teams to the streets and alleys, and armed with yellow trash bags donated by the City, everyone got to work. Volunteers from Harrisburg to Columbia County removed countless tires, mattresses, and debris, in a show of support for this important and loved community. In preparation for the day, the Departments of Environmental Services and License and Inspection worked with us to notify property owners, clear designated abandoned lots, and provide a huge roll-off container, bags and gloves. Knology orchestrated the event and provided pizza and giveaways for all. It was a perfect day and an excellent example of collaboration between public and private entities. Looks like the start of an annual event!

After their last Block Party, these volunteers, who are used to traveling cross-country for disaster relief projects, informed us that “a half a day’s work wasn’t enough for them.” We were more than happy to sign them back up for a full day’s work. Led by Paul Johnson, these wonderful folks covered a lot of ground for us on Saturday, April 14. Trinity on the Hill has supported Turn Back The Block from its inception, and we salute their continued dedication. FYI, when the Seekers Sunday School class comes out, there is often Jo Ann’s excellent pound cake as a reward!

They’ll be out swinging hammers the third Saturday of the month from now through summer, so give your favorite YPA member a pat on the back next time you see them. We couldn’t do this without you all!

It was a gorgeous day, and lots of hard work was accomplished. They were joined by members of The Well Church, new TBTB volunteers. Thanks to both groups for supporting our mission to revitalize Harrisburg and promote home ownership.

We are grateful to all of you who kept the faith and came out to support Turn Back The Block. The food, catered by Fireside Grill and by French Market Grille West, was fabulous, and The Blue Dogs did not disappoint. Lisa Taylor did an amazing job of organizing this fundraiser, and Christy Beckham and Chris Rucker helped her knock it out of the park. Thanks to our many sponsors for your gracious support. So many of you have told us how much fun you had, so you’ll be pleased to know plans are already in the works for next year’s Blue Jean Ball.

These folks got more accomplished in 4 hours than we could have hoped for, preparing our third house on Broad Street for rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the wonderful FROGS (Faithful Retired Old Guys) completed the roof on the rear addition of our second house. These gentlemen have been out here every Monday, and lots of other days in between, donating their construction skills to our organization. It truly was inspiring to witness these two groups working side by side to make Harrisburg a better community. These people understand the meaning of service and giving back to their community, and TBTB is grateful.
